There's a packed programme of events planned in Barnstaple in the run up to Christmas, kicking off
with the town's light switch-on event on Sunday 18 November.
The day will kick off with a Christmas Art, Craft & Food Fair in aid of North Devon Hospice in the
Pannier Market; with around 90 stands you’ll find delicious artisan food, wonderful art, beautiful crafts,
clothing and toys – the perfect way to start your Christmas shopping.
This is also the perfect opportunity to come and see the beautiful Christmas Wreaths which have
been decorated by local businesses, charities and community groups. At 12.00pm we will be carrying
out the judging and announcing this year’s winners.
Local dance schools will be taking part in the nationwide annual Children in Need Tapathon world
record attempt at 1pm, everyone is welcome to join them on the Square to take part in the event and
raise funds for Children in Need.
Add to the children’s Christmas excitement with the magic and sparkle of the family fun fair on The
Strand, including a giant snow globe at Queen Anne’s Café. Or why not pop to Green Lanes to see
Santa in his grotto as you check out the shops?
At 4pm the usual magical, festive mix of entertainment and music will star on the stage until the
countdown to the big light switch on at 6pm.
Before the main lights are illuminated, there will be a chance to support the North Devon Hospice and
Children’s Hospice South West’s Light up a Life campaign as a special star is lit up to mark the launch
of the appeal.
There will then be a sneak preview of what to expect from Peter Pan, this year’s spectacular
pantomime, as two of the stars take to the stage with special performances.
The full line up for the Square is as follows:
4.00 - Centre Stage School
4.30 - Bicycle Repair Man
5.00 - Soulcraft
5.30 - Launch of Light up a Life Campaign (featuring Sophie Kerslak)
6.00 - Switch - on featuring performances from pantomime stars and the winner of The Voice’s community hero competition
Hopps and Chapple from local radio station, The Voice, will keep the party going and invite their
community hero onto the stage to push the plunger and light up the town.
The full programme of Christmas activities boasts more events than ever before and features a
selection of new activities along with some firm favourites.
Barnstaple Town Centre Manager, Hannah Harrington, says: "I'm really excited about the festivities
this Christmas which really do offer something for everyone. A huge thank you must go to all the local
businesses and councillors who have supported us, without which none of the events would be
